Anycast

Building Resilience in DNS

CommunityDNS has built its network on three foundational elements: security, speed & capacity, and resilience, with Anycast technology serving as a crucial component.

Our hardened operating system, our in-house built custom DNS application software and our responsive distribution network means that our nodes in more than 40 countries can be kept 100% accurate. In addition, many ISP and Internet Exchange Points host a CommunityDNS node(s) in their facilities to improve services to their customers; by keeping DNS look-ups local the vagaries of networking can be avoided. We have our custom ISO available online for easy installation of a node at a remote location, then we encrypt the hardware and the communication channel, to allow us to keep the node up to date from our control centre.

With robust security measures, including encryption protocols and advanced threat detection, the DNS infrastructure is safeguarded against malicious attacks.

The network is designed to handle high query volumes, ensuring fast and efficient DNS resolution. Anycast technology enables mirrored redundancy across multiple locations, maintaining seamless operation even in the face of server disruptions. This highly distributed and resilient DNS infrastructure ensures continuous service availability.

Advantages of Anycast Technology

Anycast technology offers several advantages that contribute to the resilience of CommunityDNS's network:

  Mirrored Redundancy
Mirrored Redundancy

All nodes share a single IP address, enabling mirrored redundancy. Customers' zone data is replicated across all nodes, ensuring consistency and reliability.

Geographical Optimization
Geographical Optimization

Anycast directs DNS queries to the closest Anycast node based on users' geographic proximity. This reduces latency, improves response times, and enhances the user experience.

Isolation of Attacks and Traffic Spikes
Isolation of Attacks and Traffic Spikes

DNS data mirrored across nodes allows for isolation of attacks and traffic spikes to specific nodes. This safeguards network stability and ensures uninterrupted service availability.
